On this tour we explore one of the most fascinating motorbikes loops one can imagine – the Northern Ha Giang Loop Tour. There is nothing ‘standard’ when venturing out on these roads and there is no ‘standard’ way how to put the roadstogether or what sights to explore more in depth. It all comes down to what one wish to put priority on, interest, seasons and driving skills. On this tour there is the possibility to include some shorter ½ trekking if that is of interest. For those interested in photography this tour progresses at a space where there is more time for these opportunities both during the day of driving and with time when arriving for the afternoon final stop.The tour will make sure to cover the common highlights of the loop such as Heaven’s Gate, the Highland of Stone, the Fairy Hills, Dong Van, the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass and the backroads of the spectacular inner Ha Giang Loop Tour mountains. The tour would also give opportunity to cherry-pick exploration of further sights without stress such as visits of the Lung Khuy Cave, Lung Tam female weaving cooperative

Possibility to self-drive or to ride pillion (behind guide/driver). If self-driving, we recommend sound prior motorcycling experience

We can visit  little native villages, see how they live and really have a chance to appreciate the hardship in such beautiful terrain. The amazing thing is despite it all, the smiles never leave their faces.  There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos. The tour will cover the highlights of the loop, including places such as: The Heaven’s Gate, the Highland of Stone, the Fairy Hills, Dong Van, the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass and the backroads of the spectacular inner Ha Giang Loop Tour . The tour will also give you the opportunity to select other amazing sites to visit such as the Lung Khuy Cave and the Lung Tam female weaving cooperative. 

There is an option to drive the motor bikes yourself, however, we recommend sound prior motorcycling experience

Itinerary

The route of the tour will depend on driving skills, seasons and market days. 

Please note that for the tour to include Dong Van or Meo Vac weekly Sunday market. Tour departs on a Friday or Saturday morning. The markets are well known to be a gathering and melting pot of indigenous tribes, coming down from the Highlands to trade their home grown produce. They typically have to get up at 3am to take the long Hike down the mountains for this gathering. It is highly recommended.

Day 01 Ha Giang- Heaven Gate- Quan Ba pass-yen Minh - Vuong palace - Dong Van

Today we will drive 145 kms.  You will be provided with time to walk around and soak in the atmosphere of the surroundings. This trip aims to highlight the culture and lifestyle of the Mong people. 

Here is the general idea behind this days route: 

The first main stop will be the Heaven's Gate. An amazing site which is 1500m above sea level. From this height, it offers a glimpse of what is about to come. The greenery, the typical winding roads, the yellow colour of ripening rice terraces; all of which only help to temp your wanderlust and sense of adventure!

At our next stop, Quan Ba, you can see the famous Angel Twin mountains. This is like a meeting place of the sun, the mountain and the forest, setting a scene for any poets to fall in love with. 

Our tour group will have lunch in a small restaurant in Yen Minh. 

After the lunch break, we will drive down Ha Giang, 15 km west from Dong Van, to visit the Vuong palace. It was once home to a powerful Tribal King in the early 20th century.  It was also declared  a National Cultural Heritage by the government in 1993. Please take the time to walk around the site , to gaze at the beautifully crafted wooden structure which has survived two wars. If you come in spring, you will enjoy being surrounded by peach blooms lining the complex. It is like everything in vietnam, history goes hand in hand with beauty.

After this short immersion in history,we will be on our way. We will reach Dong Van at 5pm. You will be in a homestay with a local family for the night.  Expect the same warm friendly treatment from our host. To add to your delights, we are  arranging for you to have a good long soak in the Red Dao’s indigenous herbal bath to relax those overworked muscles. This is part of our gift to you.  Dinner will be served immediately after the bath. After dinner, you can rest in your own comfortable bed or  you can join me for a hot cup of tea to reminisce about our day.

Day 2 Dong Van -Chinese border- flag tower - Ma Pi Leng pass- Meo Vac.

After breakfast, we will visit a historical site with significant importance; Lung Cu flag tower. It is considered to be the north pole of Vietnam, lying close to the Chinese border. It was said that the flagpole was set thousands of years ago  by a much admired Vietnamese General to separate Vietnam from China. The view from the tower is looking down at the two lakes which the indigenous people believe to never run out, signifying the two eyes on a dragon, guarding the country.  Standing at this north pole position, you can help but feel the closeness to China with only 3 kms between the two countries. The view from the pole is amazing and well worth the trip.

Today we will drive through the Dong Van Geopark. The view is one of the best Vietnam has to offer. 

We will drive through the Ma Pi Leng Pass, which is considered the "King"of Vietnam's passes. The pass’s first 20 km is along Happiness Road, which was hand constructed through the combined effort of the indigenous people, and is viewed as the Romance Road. In Meo Vac you can see one of the most stunning landscapes in the country! Steep mountain ranges rise into the sky to give an appearance like cat ears. On beautiful days, you will feel you are caught between the majestic heaven and earth, with gentle mist rolling from the high mountains down to the fiercely green Nho Que river. The scenery offers a unique look for once in a lifetime selfies that will rouse jealousy from the people at home. If you come around springtime, your mind will be filled with the natural beauty of peaches and plums blossoms. No matter when you come, Meo Vat promises  unforgettable experiences! 

Arriving at 5 p.m., we will stay at a homestay in the town of Meo Vac. The home stay is a true reflection of the region. Nestling at the foot of the mountain, the homestay oozes charms and comfort. After a day of endless changes in the scenery, you are welcome back to a green peaceful setting to allow your mind to rest ready for yet another adventure tomorrow. 

Day 3 Meo Vac - Lung phin - Mau Due -Du Gia - Waterfalls.

Departing from Meo Vac, we head to Lung Phin.  The market at Lung Phin is held every six days on the lunar calendar. It is where people from Hmong, Dzao, and China come out from the mountain to trade their produce. Not only that, it is also an occasion where love blossoms. Only the brightest and best clothes are worn. Please let us know if you are interested in attending the market. We will help you to work out the dates so as to avoid disappointment. We will also have the opportunity to  Heading off to Mau Due, you will notice a gradual change coming out of Lung Ping greenery to an abrupt change of sheer limestone mountains. There will be some steep ascent before the beauty of Mau Due unfolds in front of your eyes. Treacherous limestone peaks soar up everywhere around you. Local houses precariously perched high on the mountain. In the colder months, a misty blanket of fog rolls slowly down,  embraces the scenery, glooming, menacing yet poses an irresistible charm. our ride will be slow as we descend into Du Gia

Lunch will be served at Mau Due. After Lunch, we will bike to Ngoc Long, where we will row our boats to a secret hideout where you will not be able to resist jumping into the private oasis for a cool dip. Imagine sinking and being as one with nature after a day of wonders.

After a day of wonders, and refreshed,  We will stay overnight at Du Gia with our friendly Tay home stay, where you will no doubt experience a warm welcome from our home stay family. We have carefully selected a home stay to reflect the life of the Tay’s people. Their lives are at one with mother nature. The food that they have lovingly prepared are either home grown or from the mountain. You will relax and dine surrounded by greenery, listening to the noise of nature, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Day 4 Du Gia - Bac me - Ha Giang

Today, we are heading to a region where the government is planning to turn into an eco tourism area. Stepping away from the grey paradise of the past two days, new experiences await. Bac Me is awash with amazing rice terraces, green mountains and gentle creeks. Away from the stony mountains, the hills are green, lush and alive. There are thirteen ethnic groups living together in the region bringing diversity along with cultural values with their unique identity. You will have the  opportunity to visit the local white Mong family, seeing them going about their daily lives, living a life free of commercialism. 

All parting is sad.  We will continue on our journey back to At 4:30 pm we will be back in Ha Giang.
